FLORENCE, Italy — JMU has begun to spread its master’s program abroad and the birthplace of the Renaissance is its next stop. Beginning in fall 2007, JMU will kick off its new Master’s of Political Science program in Florence, Italy.
The program’s focus is European Union studies with further concentrations in commerce and trade, European policy and information technology and security.
All students will take a year-long class — the first six months consisting of general European Union policy. During the second six months, the focus will be on their concentrations.
JMU made a large step Wednesday, leasing a 17th-century Renaissance building, or palazzo, to house the program and students. The classic building is located in the artisan district of Florence and shoulders up to the historic Santo Spirito church. In addition, students and faculty can enjoy a lively farmer’s market just outside the school doors.
All the classes will be taught in English.
Headed by political science professor Jessica Adolino, the program will start with about 18 students all housed in the top floors of the palazzo. The faculty will consist primarily of European professors, including some from Bologna University. This program is a joint effort between the political science department and the Office of International Programs.
