The Breeze, James Madison University’s student newspaper, provides news and advertising for a growing population at one of Virginia’s finest public institutions. The Breeze is published on Mondays and Thursdays during the academic year and distributed free of charge to JMU and the surrounding communities.

A 2002 survey conducted by the JMU Center for Entrepreneurship found that over nintey-three percent of JMU students read The Breeze at least once a month. More than thirty-eight percent read every issue of The Breeze. The survey also found that over forty-one percent of students have used a coupon from The Breeze, and almost forty percent said that advertising in The Breeze influences their purchasing decisions.

With a circulation of 9,500, The Breeze serves a readership of more than 22,000, including over 16,000 students, 3,000 faculty and staff, and members of the Harrisonburg community. In addition, local businesses receive more than 1,000 free copies of The Breeze for their patrons.

The newspaper won the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence award for best non-daily student newspaper (publishing two to four times a week) in the nation in 1999 and 2000.
