The SGA allocated nearly $4,000 on Tuesday night to four university organizations.
Phi Alpha Beta, JMU’s history fraternity, asked for $1,000 from SGA’s contingency fund to invite Gar Alperovitz, a prestigious history and political economist from the University of Maryland, to speak at the regional fraternity conference hosted this year at JMU.
“This is a great chance to build on professional experience,” said Sen. David Allen (Sr.) and president of Phi Alpha Beta. “While the conference is usually pretty boring, we wanted to bring someone who will bring a lot of energy and historical interpretation.”
Said Sen. Jessica Landis (So.): “This is a really great group to give money to, and bringing a speaker will make JMU look a lot more important.”
Catholic Campus Ministry also requested $1,000 to pay for four of their members to visit Cruz Verde to do community service.
Circle K International, the largest coed service organization in North America, requested funds to pay for the registration fees of four members to attend their national conference. The organization was allocated $350 by the senate.
“They obviously do a lot of work and should be able to be recognized for it,” Landis said. “They work with children really closely; we should give them the money and help them out even more.”
Student Occupational Therapy Assocation received $1,400 to pay for the registration of four members to attend the SOTA conference. The conference has 500 educational sessions to help strengthen programs, meet with other SOTA groups, and attend the assembly of student delegates.
“I personally loved working with this group, they were a lot of fun and dedicated to their work,” Landis said. “Occupation therapy is so broad, and the conference will allow students to focus on one concentration they are really interested in.”
