Classic 'All My Sons' to hit the stage this week at Latimer-Shaeffer

Miller’s production revolves around personal relationships, battles

The discussion of war and American sentiments in Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” caused a stir when it was penned in 1946. Based on a true story, the play follows the Keller family, where the audience discovers strange details about them and follows their interactions with the world.

Pamela Johnson directs the cast led by senior Daniel Crabtree as Joe Keller, senior Brynn Dorsey as Kate Keller, senior Brandon Ferraro as Chris Keller, junior McLean Fletcher as Ann Deever and senior Vince Zangardi as George Deever.

Also starring are junior Travis Hockswender, senior Matthew Kagen, senior Haley Firetti, freshmen Rachel Camp and Joshua Charles Byrd.

The play follows themes that many find relevant today.

“Hopefully the audience will find some aspect to relate to and see the almost-disturbing relevance that it has today,” Ferraro said.

But don’t think that the entire production is a tirade against war.  Most of the play revolves around the Keller family and their personal battles and relationships.

In addition, the production captures a time period in American history that is still pertinent.

Ben Nicholson’s set construction helps place the scene.

“The design aspects are ridiculous and it looks like a photo straight out of the 1940s,” Ferraro noted.

The set adds to the realism of the production and immerses the audience into the show. The realistic props and set details are meant to keep the audience focused on the actors and not the set.

Costumes by juniors Julia Baumgardner and Emma Fyffevkeep the actors planted in the period as well.  Shelly Thiss’ lighting and Emma Sumner’s sound design complete the production.

“All My Sons” runs April 17 to 21 in Latimer-Shaeffer Theatre in Duke Hall.  The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are available for $6 with a JAC Card at the Masterpiece Season Box Office in Harrison Hall, 12 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
