Speed bump to be lowered over Thanksgiving

After Thanksgiving cars will no longer have to thump over the hump while traveling along Duke Drive, near the R-1 Lot and C-5 Lot.

As part of Student Body President Lee Brooks’ campaign “to make the Centennial the best it could be,” lowering this speed bump was one of the changes he promised to make.

“I use that road to commute each day, and it used to be a normal speed bump, but now it’s like a mountain,” Brooks said.

So far, students seem pleased with the change.

“I hate that speed bump,” junior Kim Murrell said.  “My car bottoms out all the time.”

Murrell isn’t the only one.

“I hate it,” junior Kerri Managan said. “I totally flew over it one time because I didn’t realize how big it was and BAM — there goes the bottom of my car.”

Towana Moore, associate vice president for business services, said that they had not heard any complaints about the speed bump, until  Brooks brought it to her attention.

According Moore the speed bump was not intentionally raised.

“It just got a little too high as a result of some work we did this summer on the road,” she said.

Brooks heard complaints from other students about the speed bump damaging  cars and decided to take matters into his hands. He brought the issue to Moore and suggested she drive over it herself. Moore agreed that there was an issue.

Over Thanksgiving break while the students are gone, Facilities Management will have the bump lowered.

“So cars won’t scrape on it,” Moore said.

Murrell was pleased when she heard about the change.

She said, “I’m very happy about it because the speed bump is way too big the way it is.”
