Wireless coming to dorms

Information Technology (IT), the Office of Residence Life (ORL) and Student Government Association (SGA) are working together to install wireless in residence hall study lounges.

“Not having internet access in the study lounges does not lead to a conducive study environment,” SGA Sen. John Sutter said.

IT and ORL have been discussing going wireless for nearly three years.

IT will be doing a site review next week to see which dorms will be easiest to install wireless. Hillside is already completed. IT expects newer dorms such as Potomac, Chesapeake, and the newly renovated Bluestones to be next. The Village dorms are expected to be more difficult and left until last.

For the easier dorms, wireless should be installed and ready to go in the next few weeks, according to Hulvey. If things run smoothly, all the dorms’ study lounges should have wireless by the end of the second semester.

While wireless is only being installed in the study lounges in most dorms, IT will be installing wireless throughout Hoffman Hall and any other new or renovated residence halls.

Sophomore Eric Schramm, who lives in Chappelear, thinks this will be a great help to those who live on campus.

“If we have wireless, then we won’t be forced to do homework that involves internet in our rooms,” Schramm said. “Sometimes you just need to find a quiet place in the dorm.”
