We’re only one week into the 2007 NFL season and not much has changed from last year. The Super Bowl Champion Colts got off to a sensational start with a 45-10 victory over last years feel good team, the New Orleans Saints. Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning passed for 288 yards and 3 scores. The Patriots proved that they are serious contenders (and cheaters) and have Super Bowl aspirations coming off an easy 38-14 victory over the rival Jets. Even the Chargers were able to hold off the NFC champion Bears despite being shut down in the 1st half and receiving poor production from Phillip Rivers. With that being said, here are last weeks Studs, Duds, and Sleepers for the upcoming week.
Studs:
Tony Romo, Dallas
The former Eastern Illinois QB torched the Giants defense for 345 yards and 4 touchdowns through the air. For good fun, Romo threw in a rushing touchdown as well. Dr. Kerr’s Fantasy Player of the Week.
Adrian Peterson, Minnesota
In his first professional game, Peterson did nothing to disappoint the Minnesota fans. The former Sooner rushed for 103 yards and added a spectacular one-handed 60 yard TD catch. Viking fans rejoice, you will have a stud for a long time.
Plaxico Burress, New York
Well don’t get used to this one… Burress had a sensational game against Romo’s Cowboys, torching them for 8 catches, 144 yards, 3 TD’s, and a game changing 6 first downs. I guess it’s a good thing I traded Eli Manning after week 1.
Duds:
Phillip Rivers, San Diego
The Chargers QB, who led San Diego to the best record in the NFL last year, looked just plain average against a tenacious Bears defense. With 190 yards, 1 pick, and no TD’s, I’m sure the Chargers are happy LT can throw.
Cedric Benson, Chicago
The air apparent to Thomas Jones did nothing to assure Bears fans that they made the right move in the off-season. With 42 yards on 19 carries, roughly 2.2 per, and 1 fumble- us Bears fans might be missing TJ much more then we thought.
Santana Moss, Washington
Moss is supposed to be the #1 guy in Washington and leader to young Jason Campbell. So what does he do on Sunday? Drop three easy first downs and force the Redskin offense to punt on all three occasions. Good thing Antwaan Randle El is no Brandon Lloyd.
Sleeper:
Derrick Ward, New York
Everyone including myself thought that Reuben Droughns was going to be Brandon Jacobs backup in case of injury. We were wrong. Ward ran over Dallas for 89 yards on the ground and another 27 in the air, including a touchdown. He’s a shoe in to replace Jacobs, get him now!
Big Weeks:
Maurice Jones-Drew vs. Atlanta Defense
Ben Roethlisberger vs. Buffalo
Shaun Alexander vs. Arizona
Carson Parlmer vs. Cleveland
Indy WR’s vs. Tennessee
