It is not often that students get a chance to see professors doing things outside of their conventional cycle of activities. Lecturing, mentoring and chatting during office hours tends to be the extent of a student’s view of a professor’s day-to -day tasks.
This weekend, a handful of professors from the school of theatre and dance will be reversing this norm while having some extracurricular fun and performing in the annual New Dance Festival, performed at Latimer-Shaeffer Theatre.
The New Dance Festival is a contemporary dance performance, featuring JMU professors and alumni, as well as a professional company.
“This is a dance concert to showcase professional dancers, choreographers, and dance faculty work,” dance professor Susanne Miller-Corso said.
Even though the school of theatre and dance is preparing for a year full of student performances, the event gives professors and professionals the chance to focus on their personal passions and areas of expertise.
The festival will include work by a guest company from Washington, D.C., called Bosmadance, which was rated amongst the “25 to Watch For” in Dance Magazine. Faculty members showcased will be Miller-Corso, Shane O’Hara and Cynthia Thompson. O’Hara will be performing a dance-theatre piece while Thompson is premiering a duet to music by Verdi. Miller-Corso will perform an autobiographical solo choreographed by Roxann Morgan.
Audience members can look forward to an exciting and unique view of dance and theatre through the festival.
“The concert is meant to expose audience members to current work happening in the contemporary and modern dance world, hence the name ‘new’ Dance Festival,” Miller-Corso said.
As the festival is a collection of individual pieces, there will be an element of surprise with each performance, which should keep audience members on their toes.
The New Dance Festival will run Sept. 7-8 at 8 p.m. in Latimer- Shaeffer Theatre in Duke Hall. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for children, seniors and JMU students. Tickets are available through JMU’s Masterpiece Season box office, which can be reached at x7000.
