Web exclusive: JMU’s definitely got talent

It’s official: JMU definitely has talent.

The first-ever “JMU’s Got Talent” event celebrated the diverse talent of the student body, as well as marking100 days until May graduation Wednesday night.

There were 12 total acts ranging from singers to dancers and even a juggler. All the acts were talented and each had their own unique niche.

The judges included Mark Warner, Shannon Thatcher and Lee Brooks.

First place went to sophomore Josh Vana, who played an original song he wrote on guitar while also playing the harmonica simultaneously. He even rallied the crowd to clap to his beat while he stomped on the floor.

Second place went to seniors Amy Hilton and Steven Hughes. The duo performed the song “Break on Through.” Hughes strung the cords while Hilton wrote the lyrics and sang.

Third place went to Brian Gurney, who performed “A Love Song,” an original solo he wrote and played by himself.

The prize for the first place winner was a JMU fleece along with coupons to the bookstore, while the second place winners took home gift baskets of DVDs, candy and soft drinks. The third place winner took home a JMU T-shirt and a Nathaniel Baker CD.

The show concluded with a stellar performance by the JMU break dance team, who broke it down to the likes of Missy Elliot, Snoop Dogg and Sean Kingston.

The event was sponsored by the Madison Giving Campaign.
