JMU hosts music festival this week


The School of Music is hosting its 28th Annual Contemporary Music Festival Feb. 6-10. The guest composer, Steve Reich, is referred to by The New York Times as “our greatest living composer.” The festival will feature five concerts as well as a variety of additional events. Tickets for Concerts I-V are $6 ($3 student/senior). Passes for all concerts are $24 ($12 student/senior) and are available at the door or at the Music Office (Music Building, room 123).

Thursday, Feb. 7:

The day will begin  at 10:30 a.m. in the Wilson Hall Auditorium with a discussion led by Reich on music, which will include a reading, listening and discussion. The evening will begin with a pre-concert discussion with Reich at 7:30 p.m. Concert II will then begin featuring the Madison Singers.

 Friday, Feb. 8:

Concert III will he held Friday in Wilson Hall Auditorium at 8 p.m. and features the JMU Percussion Ensemble.

Saturday, Feb. 9:

Two concerts will be held on Saturday. The first is the Student Composers’ Recital held in room 108 of the Music Building. The free event will feature the winners of the Student Composers’ Competition. The second concert is part III in the concert series and will be held in Wilson Hall Auditorium. It will host the JMU Brass Band performing “...Dove Descending” by British composer Philip Wilby.

Sunday, Feb. 10:

The final concert of the 2008 Contemporary Music Festival will be at 3 p.m. in Wilson Hall Auditorium. The Jazz Ensemble and Wind Symphony will perform work composed by Reich.
