Gunshots reported near college housing

Harrisonburg police responded about 1:45 a.m. Sunday to reports of four to six gunshots in the area of Westport Village Apartments on Port Republic Road. According to Cpl. B. Alvis of the Harrisonburg Police Department, officers checked with Rockingham Memorial Hospital and Augusta Medical Center and it seems that no one was injured. Police believe through witness statements that a group of four to five black males were involved and they left the scene before officers arrived. Alvis added that shell casings were found in the area, but reports did not indicate how many.

According to a JMU Timely Notice issued Monday afternoon, the person who fired the gun is described as a "black male in his 20s, 6' tall, wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and a light colored hat." The notice also states that two vehicles were seen leaving the area. The first is a beige Chevy Blazer with aftermarket wheels and dark-tinted windows. The second is a dark-colored Honda Accord, also with dark-tinted windows.

Anyone with information on this incident can call Crime Solvers at 574-5050 or the Harrisonburg Police Department at 434-4436. Reports can also be made in person at the Harrisonburg Public Safety Building or on the web though the HPD “Contact Us” page at http://www.ci.harrisonburg.va.us/index.php?id=299.
