Commonwealth’s Attorney Marsha Garst announced Feb. 28 that charges will not be filed against 22-year-old Matthew N. Birzon, of Setauket, N.Y., who was identified as the driver that struck freshman Bria Jahrling Jan. 29 on Bluestone Drive.
Jahrling was severely injured after Birzon’s 2000 Audi sedan struck her while she was on her way to ballet in Godwin Hall about 11 a.m.
In a prepared statement released by Garst, she said that the police investigation indicated that Birzon and Jahrling did not have time to react in order to avoid the accident. “This is indeed a tragic incident,” it read in part, “and our hearts and prayers go out to Bria Jahrling and her family as we wish her a full recovery from her serious injuries.”
Correction: As originally published, the driver was identified as Matthew N. Brizon. Though this name appears on official documents, it is a misspelling. Birzon is the correct spelling.
