Junior Scott Davidson combined computer mice and scrumptious cookies to win a technology award from the Shenandoah Valley Technology Council.
Davidson is the owner of Craving Cookies LLC, a business known among students for providing a late-night snack of freshly baked cookies and a carton of milk. To ensure that the cookies are delivered in a timely manner and that the business operation runs smoothly, Davison utilizes an e-commerce system and a Web site, which he designed himself.
The Shenandoah Valley Technology Council recognized his efforts in last week’s March 5 Tech Night Awards. The ceremony highlighted local entrepreneurship and technologically-savvy innovators.
Although Davidson was nominated for the Innovative Technology Application Award, an award geared toward recognizing agricultural and manufacturing based industries, he lost. He did, however, receive a new award, created to honor his achievements because his use of technology and business molded to the desires of the Harrisonburg area.
Davidson was encouraged by winning the award.
“It motivates me to work harder on Craving Cookies and to take it as far as I can,” he said. “If it is not going to work I want to be in reality, but it encourages me to continue.”
Letitia Green, an attendant at the Shenandoah Valley Technology Council event and managing director of the Virginia Active Angel Network, was so impressed with Davidson’s work she invited him to speak at a University of Virginia MBA class.
While appreciative of the recognition, Davidson is not wasting time basking in his glory. Davidson recently reached an exciting milestone in the company’s history.
“We have sold 26,000 cookies so far,” he said. “This shows a positive trend. In the past two months, we have sold the same amount of cookies as all of last semester.”
With such positive feedback and support from the community, Davidson has plans for expansion. By August he hopes to have a store in Harrisonburg. Davidson is also looking to other universities in anticipation of moving his market to other schools.
Davidson currently spends 54 hours each week working on all aspects of Craving Cookies, from structuring workers’ shifts to managing inconvenient obstacles.
