Johns Hopkins University’s debate team won the James Madison Commemorative Debate and Citizen Forum last week, sponsored by the James Madison Center and hosted by JMU’s Debate team.
Debate teams from 17 universities across the country joined Thursday to DEBATE how the United States should chart a new course toward peace in the Middle East.
The participating teams engaged in three preliminary debate rounds, leading up to the final round which took place in Wilson Hall Auditorium at 5 p.m. The event was held using the Mace form of debate, popular in Britain and also referred to as “long table.”
Two opposing sides, the affirmative and the negative, argued in bilateral debate to find resolution on the current situation in the Middle East and future U.S. policy.
Final-round judges awarded first through sixth place prizes. Johns Hopkins team took home the Madison Cup and a cash reward of $5,000, presented at the main Centennial event on Friday, March 14. Lower placing teams were also rewarded additional cash prizes.
