Students split over resultsby Eileen Fairlie and Sharon Schiff / contributing writer and senior writer
Campus became a battleground as students showed their support for either
President George W. Bush or Sen. John Kerry, hanging banners in dorm windows
and wearing shirts and buttons featuring the name of the candidate they
supported. Junior Sarah Bennett said, "Never have I seen an election put as
much effort to get people to vote as this one and it worked. Its
a close one." The closeness of the election was no shock, junior Jason Rock said. "The
voter turnout shows that people really cared about the election." Some people didnt feel as though they need to watch as the results
were released though. "I kind of thought Bush was going to win,"
freshman Ryan Morgan said, "I didnt really pay attention [Tuesday]
night because I knew it wouldnt be settled." He said he waited
until Wednesday morning to find out the final results. On the other hand, some students stayed up late to see who the next president would be. "It didnt really bother me one way or another (who won the election)," freshman Stephanie Benner said. She said she and her friends stayed up until around 1:30 a.m. when Bush was announced as the winner on Fox news. "It was really interesting because it was such a close race."
"I was disappointed as a Kerry supporter," freshman Troy Holley
said. Around 11:30 a.m. yesterday, Sen. Kerry announced that he conceded the election after hearing he lost Ohio. President Bush will remain in the White House for four more years.
