Reports of Baghdad's liberation joyous, guarded
House Editorial
The images of Iraqi civilians rejoicing at the destruction of
a 20-foot tall statue evoke memories of ecstatic young Germans celebrating
the removal of the Berlin Wall almost 15 years ago. Feelings that
had long been pent-up and repressed burst forth as the news of Baghdad's
capture flashed across the city and then around the world.
Dissent against war hard to understand
Of My World View
"As the war in Iraq enters its second week, President George
W. Bush's approval rating rose to 68 percent a 15 percent
increase from two weeks ago," according to a March 29 Newsweek
poll. The article goes on to say, "Seventy percent of those
polled approve of
his actions in Iraq
a 17 percent
jump from the percentage who approved of Bush's policies to deal
with the threat posed by Iraq and its leader Saddam Hussein in late
January."
Iraqi child dies by
American bullets
Pigs and Pearls
I knew that it was bound to happen. Take 200,000 American troops,
send them into "enemy" cities and stir. The recipe is
guarranteed to result in the deaths of children. What I had hoped
is that somehow my generation could escape the horror of knowing
that children in Iraq had been killed intentionally.
