This Saturday the Godwin gymnasium will be transformed into a
hip-hop mecca. Break dancers from all over the East coast will flock
to JMU to participate in Circles 4, a break dancing competition.
According to the JMU Break Dance Club Web site, Circles 4 will
feature every aspect of hip-hop, including b-boys, b-girls, emcees,
DJ's and graffiti artists. Judging the contest is Dyzee from
"Supernaturalz," a professional break dancing group in
Toronto, Canada. Hosting Circles 4 is emcee Freestyle, formerly
of a music group called "The Arsonists," and spinning
for the event are DJ Dadeo and DJ Geometrix.
Vice president of the club Matt Eubank, a junior, said the Break
Dance Club has been preparing for Circles 4 all year, practicing
twice a week. "We're a lot better this year [and have]
been getting better each year. But it's going to be tough competing
against teams who practice every day."
Eubanks said 32 b-boy and eight b-girl break dance crews ranging
from high school students to semiprofessionals will attend.
JMU Break Dance Club President Justin Busacca, a senior, said,
"It's easily the biggest break dance event in the area."
According to Busacca, Circles 4 is a major hip-hop event for many
East Coast universities, bringing in an audience of almost 1,000
each year.
According to the Break Dance Club Web site, tickets for Circles
4 are $7 with any student ID and $10 for non-students. Doors open
at 5 p.m. The b-girls will start battling promptly at 6 p.m., followed
by the Emcee King of the Hill competition.
The second half of the night will include a performance by the
Madison Dance Club, which will be followed by the four-on-four b-boy
battles. A b-boy battle consists of one team break dancing with
another simultaneously. The winner of the b-boy battles will receive
a $2,000 prize. All other proceeds will go to the Boys' and
Girls' Club of Harrisonburg.
