JMU travels to GMU for CAA series

by Jennifer Chapman / contributing writer

The offense that was present at the beginning of this season needs to reappear for the JMU softball team to be contenders in the Colonial Athletic Association conference tournament hunt.

After suffering through a long weekend that saw the Dukes garner only nine hits in a three-game sweep at the hands of Drexel University, Madison hits the road against conference foe George Mason University.

"For the rest of the season we are going to have to assume the role as the underdog and play with our backs against the walls," Flynn said.

The team is currently 16-20 overall and 0-6 in the conference after being swept by first place Towson University and second place Drexel. However, four out of those six games were lost by only two runs or less.

"We are going to have to keep swinging and stay positive," JMU coach Katie Flynn said.

Against Drexel, the Dukes managed only one run in those three games and in George Mason they will face a team that has won three out of its last four.

"We need to keep our heads up and stay positive," JMU senior Katie Jaworski said. "If we stay together as a team and keep working hard, we will start to win some of the tougher games that are ahead."

JMU junior second baseman Kelley Berkemeier said,"We have to play to our full potential to win and we haven’t been. This will be our weekend though, because this sleeping giant is about to wake up."

JMU’s series with Mason will open with a doubleheader Saturday at noon and conclude with a noon game Sunday.
