Spring fashion not just about clothes

Spring is the symbolic season of rebirth. Two weeks ago, we discussed the hottest looks of spring, but this week I want to delve deeper.

One thing I’ve realized in all of my years of being a slave to fashion is that it takes more than looking good on the outside to feel good overall. Besides being outwardly fashionable, this season you should also seek to rejuvenate the way you feel on the inside. This will, naturally, make you look and feel like a million bucks — no purchase necessary.

The ultimate free accessory is a smile. Even if you have a snaggle-toothed grin, smiling instantly makes you more attractive (toothpaste, lip gloss and whitening strips obviously wouldn’t hurt). Smile at a total stranger today, and who knows — it might land you a hot date for the weekend.

True friends are harder to come by than pink diamonds. Take the time to talk to your friends frequently, and let them know how much they mean to you. It’s a great feeling to know that they will always tell you when you’ve done something great or look exceptionally hot. Thankfully for the rest of mankind, he or she will also go to any length to stop you from wearing those unsightly leggings.

Music also has the power to refresh your soul. Try mellow tunes when you’re feeling stressed like the soulful sound of Jack Johnson. If you would prefer to get your dance on, trade darker artists such as Eminem for something upbeat and positive like Will Smith’s new album, "Lost and Found."

As for the glorious outdoors, spring is a season of blooming flowers. Take the time to indulge in their beauty. Stop and smell one for a change — we often forget to do something so simple. Grab your camera and some friends for a mini photo shoot in front of colorful flowers for a gorgeous backdrop.

Guys, pick a flower for your girlfriend or crush. Better yet, ladies, get a flower for your guy. This unexpected gesture will make you seem spontaneous and unique. If you don’t have a lady or fella to get you flowers, channel your inner diva by sending a bouquet to yourself. This will also brighten up your room or apartment.

Nothing says spring like the feel of grass between the toes. Take the time to walk barefoot in freshly cut grass. It’s even better with a fresh pedicure, since all of the rough skin will be sloughed away, allowing for maximum exposure.

On a sunny day, sit outside on the Quad and read for pleasure — not for class. Grab your favorite magazine featuring fun, warm-weather clothes and circle everything you love as you envision yourself wearing it (and looking way better than the models). While you’re doing this, you’re refueling your body with some much-needed Vitamin D and getting some color on your pasty winter bod. Just be sure your moisturizer or foundation has an SPF in it.

Still not feeling lively? Grab a Red Bull and welcome the season of new beginnings — for both fashion and souls.
