New BOV members appointed

by Lucia Lodato / senior writer

Governor Mark Warner appointed five new members to the JMU Board of Visitors June 27.

The board, which is responsible for overseeing the effective government of JMU, consists of 15 appointed members and one non-voting student board member.

The new BOV members include Frank L. Carzo of McLean, Meredith Strohm Gunter of Charlottesville, Charles H. Foster Jr. of Richmond, Stephen R. Leeolou of Charolotte, N.C. and Delores Z. Pretlow of Richmond.

Carzo is the CEO of the executive search firm Carzo Associates and serves on the Executive Advisory Boards of JMU and Texas A&M University.

Gunter is a former coordinator of residence education at Virginia Commonwealth University, director of student services at Longwood College and provost of the New College of Global Studies at Radford University.

Foster is the chairman and CEO of LandAmerica Financial Group Inc. He is a member of the board of the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park Corp., the Richmond Metropolitan Authority, Richmond Renaissance, the Virginia Performing Arts Foundation and the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges.

Leeolou is the president and CEO of Southstar Capital, LLC and a 1978 graduate of JMU. He is a former broadcast journalist, and has served as news anchor at WHSV-TV in Harrisonburg. The Leeolou Alumni Center at JMU is named for Leeolou and his wife, Dee Dee, also a member of the JMU class of 1978.

Pretlow is the assistant superintendent of operations for Richmond public schools. She has taught at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of South Carolina.

The five new members will replace Zane Showker, Henry H. Harrell, Conrad A. Helsley, Richard S. Fuller and Mark A. Mix. After serving two successive four-year terms, Showker, Harrell and Helsley were ineligible for reappointment.

Fuller and Mix were not reappointed for a second term.

A governor-appointed commission in Richmond made recommendations for new BOV members in JMU and other Virginia state schools.

According to Donna Harper, secretary to the board, "Four of the new members have been sworn in since the appointment, individually, before a judge in their locality." Leeolou, the only new appointee from out of state will be sworn in soon, according to Harper.

Senior Andrew Dudik will serve a one-year term as the JMU student body elected member.

New members will attend a BOV orientation in September, and the first meeting is scheduled for Oct. 4.
