A Day in the Life… of a new rushee

by Sarah Rababy / contributing writer

As the second rounds of recruitment began, sophomore Samantha Green felt both apprehensive and excited.

"I didn’t know what to expect, so that in itself got to me a little bit," Green said.

The second round began Saturday, Sept. 11. The 14 girls in Green’s group got to know each other on a more personal level by visiting each house, playing games and chatting.

"Our Rho Chi said she would call us on Saturday morning between 9 and 10 a.m. … and let us know which houses wanted us to come back," Green said. "You could get invited back to a max of six houses. A Rho Chi … takes you to all your houses, calls you and she is also there for you to confide in if you have questions or concerns."

Green was invited back around noon Saturday to her top six choices of house: Alpha Phi, Zeta Tau Alpha, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Sigma Kappa, Alpha Sigma Tau and Delta Delta Delta.

"Once I got on the row, we relaxed for a little bit and then got to our first house," Green said. "I went to Alpha Phi not really knowing what to expect … First rounds are really hectic and overwhelming because you meet so many girls in such a short amount of time."

Each house provided a different type of visit.

"At a few houses, we did some sort of craft for their philanthropy," Green said. "At one house, they help out the Rockingham Memorial Hospital and we put quotes in empty pill capsules and wrapped them in fabric so they could send them to patients to brighten their day."

Other houses provided entertainment like skits and dances or played question games to get to know everyone.

Although Samantha was on the row most of Saturday, it seems the long hours haven’t been a problem.

"I have only had one time where it was a little hectic," Green said. "I had a test on Monday and I was at Rush all day on Sunday, but it didn’t turn out to be too big of a problem."

Tuesday night, after five days of Rush, Samantha got a bid from her top choice, Alpha Sigma Tau.
